Skeptics ignorant of the true character of God complain that if God is good then why do bad things happen to people. It seems to me what they should be asking is that if God is just then why do any good things happen to people? People must bear their guilt.
"Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments and speak lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil." Isaiah 59:1-4
The salvation offered through Christ is unavailable for those who reckon themselves "good" and have no fear of God. But the discipline people receive on the earth can bring repentance if received in the right spirit. For Paul writes, "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death."2Cor 7:10
