Shame and Nakedness

Isaiah 47:1-3
"Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called Tender and delicate.  Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, Take off the skirt, Uncover the thigh, Pass through the rivers.  Your nakedness shall be uncovered, Yes, your shame will be seen; I will take vengeance, And I will not arbitrate with a man."

Comment

Used to be that there would be a correlation between shame and nakedness. We remember from the story of Adam and Eve that before they disobeyed God, "The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame." Genesis 2:25  But after sinning they felt the shame of their nakedness. However it seems when society becomes further corrupted by sexual immorality that the shame of nakedness diminishes.

Consider bathing suits women wear in Western society. It used the be that a one piece was considered appropriate. Then it went to a two piece, then to a bikini, then to a thong, and now there are just plain nude beaches in places. Many have corrupted their spirit to the point where they have lost any sense of shame of exposing themselves. This is particularly true of women. Notice that in particular God uses a female metaphor here. So also he speaks of putting them to hard work.

May I speculate that many such women are under God's judgment who don't realize it. For they uncover their own nakedness and they take on hard labor - trying to compete with men. They lose tender and delicate spirit to become hardened feminists.
