Healing the Man with Dropsy

Luke 14:1

Luke 14:1-6 (web)
It happened, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees
on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.
Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him.
Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying,
"Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
But they were silent. He took him, and healed him, and let him go.
He answered them, "Which of you, if your son  or an ox fell into a well,
wouldn’t immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"
They couldn’t answer him regarding these things.

What does this reveal about Jesus?

Jesus gives rest through healing.

Notes & Applications:

This has the same theme as the Healing the Infirm, Bent Woman in which the Sabbath was also involved.

"dropsy" = "edema" which in Pathology is an excessive accumulation of serous fluid in tissue spaces or a body cavity.

Previously with the infirmed woman he spoke of an illustraton of leading an ox or donkey to water. But here this man has some much water in him it is like he fell into the well. And Jesus goes beyond merely using animals as illustrations, for he speaks of a son falling into a well. Certainly they would have pulled their own son out of the well. So Jesus pulled the "well" out of this son, and put the "well" back into him!
