撒母耳記上１６：１３ “撒母耳就用角裏的膏油，在他諸兄中膏了他。從這日起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。”就像以色列人被云和火領著走過曠野一樣，聖靈把我們領向基督，領著我們過基督徒的生活。
聰明的童女懷著確定的信前往婚禮。她們對這個旅途很認真，事先考慮了所有可能遇到的問題。在其它寓言中，她們代表好土，代表那些穿著合宜的禮服參加婚筵的人，代表那些把他們的房子建在磐石上的人，代表那些充分利用他們的天資的人。這些人有聖靈住在他們裏面，而不只是在他們旁邊。
愚拙的童女漫不經心地上了旅途，沒有考慮到旅途的代價。她們在有限的程度上接受聖靈的指引，沒有足夠的屬靈的見解，因為沒有認真對待旅途，不得不回到出發地。但時間全部流逝，她們就失去了。
這就是那些只在名義上跟隨基督的人。當他們因為這個名而遇到困難或迫害的時候，很快就後退了。他們沒有付諸應用的信，沒有生于確定的信。他們沒有認真對待基督徒的信仰。他們必須從頭開始，用正確的態度接受邀請。但他們的時間有可能會完全用盡。在他們為婚筵做好准備之前，或許就已經死去，或許基督就已經回來了。
基督對她們說：“我不認識你們。”原文裏“認識”用的是希臘文的完成時。意思是說：“我從來不認識你們。”有許多人認為他們已經得救，而從不考慮他們的行為是否表明他們的信心的程度能夠被神所接受。讓我們不要太自以為是，而要主動地為將來的審判做准備。
