We don't believe that we "might" live with him, but that we "will" definitely live with him. Those who lack such faith have not died with Christ.

Here John is taking the hypothetical for those who are not in Christ. He commands them to now abide in Christ and when in the future they possible do so, then he guarantees that they will "go to heaven".
