可是，用律法師典型的方式，這個人試圖繞過律法，把律法變得更合自己的胃口。如果律法說要愛鄰舍的話，也許我們可以限定“鄰舍”的意義，這樣就可減少我們的責任。這看上去很可笑，但我發現這種“讓我來按我所選擇的生活方式來解釋聖經”，而不是從聖經得出我們的生活方式的態度，在基督徒中很普遍，甚至到了很嚴重的程度。這就是耶穌講這個寓言的上下文。
祭司和利末人代表宗教精英。這些人的特點是傲慢和假冒為善。他們歧視那些在他們看來低人一等的人，比如撒瑪利亞人。撒瑪利亞人當時受人歧視。因為他們雖然信猶太教，但不是純粹的猶太人。他們是血統上和神學上的混血兒，而當時的猶太宗教精非常歧視外族人。耶穌樂于羞辱自高的，升高謙卑的，這是他的特點，所以他在這個寓言裏用了撒瑪利亞人。
但耶穌對祭司和利末人的描繪并非夸張。聽眾，還有這個律法師都知道這一點。我可以想見，在他們看見這樣一個不幸的人時，這個祭司和利末人都會問他們自己這個律法師所問的同樣的問題（“誰是我的鄰舍？”）。我可想見，他們會在他們的頭腦裏進行一個小型神學辯論，急切地想從聖經裏為他們不停下來幫助這個人找出“根據”。果然，憑著多年的苦讀，他們為把自己從這個責任裏開脫出來找到了借口。
有些人（當然不是所有人）學習聖經，甚至去神學院，只是為了繞過聖經所說的。他們看到所需，但運用他們的神學不去予以滿足。在這樣做的過程中，這種人往往試圖把律法的義降低到他們可以達到的水平。這樣，因為認識不到自己的罪性，他們就沒有因罪得赦免而得來的，恩典的義。
回來想一下這個行義的人所做的。
耶穌意在使人知道律法的要求是多么高。這樣就使人做好准備，即使是自以為是的人，去接受恩典的福音。因為恩典的福音包含著律法以外的義，這個義是通過信耶穌基督由神而來到所有信了的人的。
